Yesterday was the first day of May...it's hard to believe that we are in the final month of school. We will be busy for the next 4 weeks.

Math-Geometry: We are working on 2D and 3D shapes, as well as types of angles.

Science-Life cycles: We are currently watching our tadpoles grow each day, as well as beginning to watch our lima bean seeds sprout. Our class will also learn about the life cycle of a butterfly.

ELA-We are reading many books by Kevin Henkes and working on writing about connections we have (text-to text, text-to-self, text-to-world). This week we will begin working on our final writing project of the year.

We can't believe it is almost February! As of Friday, we have been in school for 93 days. The kids have been counting down to the 100th day at school for a while now and now it is getting close.
This week we will be focusing on the following skills:
Math: We will be finishing up our money unit this week by reviewing using centers. Our end of unit test will be on Friday.

Science: We will begin a new science unit this week. For the next few weeks we will be learning about types of energy.

Reading: We are focusing on vowel digraphs this week during reading. We will practice writing words and reading words containing digraphs.

Happy Holidays to all of my students and their families! We have had a wonderful first semester. I'm looking forward to what is in store second semester.

Next week we will be finishing our math unit (Numbers and Operations-addition and subtraction with regrouping, word problems, mental math, estimation) and also finishing our Animal expert books.

Our holiday party will be on Wednesday, December 22nd. Thank you to the parents who volunteered to send in treats!

We are having a great time in second grade. The kids are learning a lot! We have introduced some new technology in our classroom this week. We have been using Elmo, which is a document camera. Ask your kids about it! The kids are getting excited for fall and October. The lobby of our school was decorated this week to help get everyone in the fall spirit!

Happy Groundhog's Day

Feb. 2nd is Groundhog's Day. Yesterday we made predictions about whether the groundhog would see his shadow. Two students predicted yes, 13 students predicted no.

Today, General Lee (GA's famous groundhog) did not see his shadow meaning spring will come early!

The famous groundhog in Pennsylvania, Punxsutawney Phil, saw his shadow which means 6 more weeks of winter.

We think we will go by General Lee!

My class has been working so hard this year. We can't believe October is almost over!
This week:
Math-We are practicing subtraction. It is important to practice subtraction at home! We are also learning how to use addition to check our subtraction problems and subtraction to check our addition problems. Our Unit 3 test is coming up next week!
LA and Reading-We are learning about possessive nouns this week. Possessive nouns have an apostrophe s and they show ownership or that something belongs. We are learning a song--have your child sing the song at home! In reading, we are learning how to use the dictionary to help us find information. We are also talking about recipes and how important it is to follow the steps in order. Have your child help you cook at home using a recipe!

We are looking forward to Book Character dress up day on Friday! Remember, no masks or scary costumes.
Also, come out to the Lake Forest parking lot on Friday 10/30 at 6:30 to participate in Trick or Trunk. Children will pay $2 and will be able to trick or treat from car to car! It will be a fun and safe night. Hope to see you there!
